The Essence of Things
I believe it has been said that you eat with your eyes before your tastebuds. Meaning, aesthetics are really important in how you are going to translate what hits your tongue. Well, I personally would think twice about eating green food (and no this isn’t referring to veggies – nice try though).
I have of late found myself in great company down in Pietermaritzburg. Yes, again. South Africans are so kewl. I have had a couple of visits to The Essence Deli Cafe situated in The Square, Chatterton Road. Whether it be in the company of friends for breakfast and a casual chat (for a few hours) or work, or sliding through to grab a coffee on the run, I have always had a great experience.
This trip however was a little different in that the sun had well set and I was stopping by for a music event. A music fund raising event with dinner. Who could resist? I have been dying to see this establishment at night and have always been of the belief that it would be fantastic. I was not disappointed. It is beautifully lit up and the decor is very charming by firelight and the ambient lighting. Plenty of room both inside and out for people to enjoy a wonderfully warm atmosphere with friends or loved ones.
This particular evening featured well known local musicians, Parable 15, who have been touring and working with Carmen Rodrigues on her Big Apple Drive. They started the evening off while fans filed in to find seats around the room. Sitting by the big fireplace certainly warms you up fast on a Winters night, but so does the scrumptious food delivered by Essence. The three course meal brought a smile to many faces while enjoying the music and ambiance of the evening.
While enjoying the Company of a good friend I managed to easily while away the evening while enjoying the music. I have seen Parable 15 perform before and enjoyed their music as much then as I did this evening. But, it was the first time I had encountered my namesake. Carmen has a big personality and is truly engaging, which makes listening to her powerful and clear voice even more entertaining. She has been raising funds after winning second place in the Talent South Africa competition that earned an entry to Talent America, so that she has an opportunity to represent SA in New York. This evening demonstrated just how capable Carmen is and how proud we can be of our talent in South Africa.

So why should you love Essence? Aside from the fact that they are supporting local talent you mean (whats not to love about that)? I see on Facebook recently that Essence has now decided to open its doors for dinner as well. This is so exciting. Well done to them for hosting a lovely evening and supporting the music scene. I look forward to some amazing meals there in the future.
All the best of luck to Carmen on her adventure and competition. Go take New York by storm girl. We know you can!
Until the next time……see you on the road!
